If you look at the average cost of a makeup application at a salon or spa, you’ll find the price to be quite high. Why? Well, salons need to cover for more than just the makeup artist’s salary. They use a portion of that fee for supplies, rent, taxes, the manager’s salary, electricity, and the list goes on. If the makeup artist is a sought after professional, the fee will be significantly higher.
So, how much should you charge for your services?
You will also want to take your salary and expenses into consideration like the salons and spas do. Think about your desired annual income and your desired annual hours of work. How much do you think your time is worth, basically? If you are a professional makeup artist, meaning you went to beauty school and have a certificate or degree, you will want to be charging at least $15/hour base pay. If you are a skilled makeup artist, but not a professional, you may want to decrease that pay a bit. But, if you feel that you’re as qualified or more qualified than most professionals, by all means adjust your pay accordingly.
For those of you that have no experience with makeup application, I would encourage you to look into taking a few classes at your local Technical College or Beauty School. If that is not possible, find some good friends and family members to practice on. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people to help you out.
Base Pay
Once you are confident in your ability as a beauty demonstrator/makeup artist and you’ve established your base pay, you’ll want to also consider the hours you’ll be working your first year in business. Most likely, you’ll be working only a few hours a week until you’ve established a good client base. Take this into consideration and prepare financially for your first year.
Next, you’ll want to consider your annual expenses. Now, these shouldn’t be very high if you plan on running the business out of your home or traveling to your clients homes. You WILL have expenses, though. For in-home beauty demonstrations, you’ll want to add a service charge for gas and travel expenses. For beauty demonstrations done at your own location (home or business), you shouldn’t be charging any service fees.
Here’s an easy formula for calculating your hourly rate.
Desired Annual Salary
+ Annual fixed costs (overhead)
+ Desired annual profit
÷ Annual billable hours

= Hourly Rate

How much could you make at your first open house?
Let’s say you invite around 50 people and put an ad in your local paper. Now, lets say only 10 people show up to your open house (you’ll most likely have more if you advertise.) Those 10 people each purchase the minimum requirement of $25 in mineral cosmetics to get their free beauty demonstration (most will purchase more than $25.) Now, lets say you purchased the Complete Candle and Cosmetic Package and you have all of the products out for cash and carry. Lets say you sold one 16oz. jar candle to each of those ten people. So, each person has a retail purchase of $43.95. This is a very low estimate. You will most likely have more than 10 people and higher sales, but we’ll use this scenario to make a point.
10 People X $43.95 = $439.95 in sales
Now, lets say you only get 30% of that (you’ll get more based on the candle sales that normally yield 50%)
$439.95 X 0.30 = $131.99
Not bad for one days work, huh? Now, just think about if 20 people came, 30, 40, or 50? And, imagine that each person purchase $50 in cosmetics, along with two 16oz. jar candles each. What would your profit be then?

Your goal is to acquire the contact information of each person in attendance, including their e-mail address for your mailing list, and follow up with them periodically by phone, mail, and e-mail.
